About this place
Chernivtsi is a city in Western Ukraine with a layered past as the historic capital of the Bukovina region. Shaped by centuries under Austro-Hungarian, Romanian, and Soviet rule, its compact, walkable centre rewards visitors with a remarkably preserved Baroque old town and an enduring multicultural character.
The historical centre is largely a pedestrian zone, making it easy to explore the main sights on foot. Though the city has a complicated twentieth-century history, its architecture and atmosphere remain the biggest draw for travellers today.
