About this place

Last updated Jun 10, 2026

Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province in southwest China, is a sprawling megacity of over 21 million people balanced on the edge of the fertile Red Basin. Known as the "Heavenly Land of Plenty" for its agricultural wealth, the city has earned a reputation as one of China's most livable mega-cities, prized for its relaxed pace, green spaces, and vibrant cultural life.

For most international travelers, Chengdu's main draw is the giant panda — the world's foremost giant panda research institute is located just outside the city. But the city offers much more: a celebrated food scene centered on Sichuan cuisine, a dynamic nightlife, and a famously large LGBTQ+ community. The Funan River runs through the city, and to the west lie the foothills of the Tibetan Plateau, offering access to some of Sichuan's most scenic mountain landscapes.

While not as internationally oriented as Beijing or Shanghai, Chengdu rewards visitors who come with a phrasebook and a sense of adventure. Its authentic urban character, affordable luxury, and unique blend of tradition and modernity make it a compelling destination for travelers seeking a deeper Chinese experience.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 10, 2026
  • Learn a few key phrases in Mandarin — English is not widely spoken outside of higher-end hotels and tourist hubs.
  • Use the Chengdu Metro to get around efficiently; single-ride tickets can be purchased from English-friendly machines using WeChat, Alipay, or cash.
  • For visiting the Panda Research Institute, arrive early in the morning when the pandas are most active.

  • Taxi drivers rarely speak English; always have your destination address written in Chinese, ideally referencing a well-known landmark nearby.
  • Carry small bills and change for taxis, as drivers often refuse large notes like ¥100.
  • Get a contactless transit card (公交卡) for unlimited metro/bus travel with discounts and free transfers within two hours.
