About this place
Chengde is a historic city set among the hills of Hebei province, about 260 km northeast of Beijing. It served as the summer residence for early Qing Dynasty emperors, and much of that imperial legacy remains beautifully preserved. The Mountain Resort and its Eight Outer Temples form a UNESCO World Heritage Site that draws visitors interested in landscape, architecture, and Chinese history.
The city itself is compact — you can walk from one end to the other in about an hour — and has a population of roughly 460,000. Walled gardens, pagodas, and lakes sit inside the vast resort, while the temples spread north and east of the center create a striking cultural circuit.

Things to Do
- Walk the Mountain Resort grounds — the imperial gardens, lakes, and wooded paths cover a huge area; set aside at least half a day to stroll.
- Sample local snacks at street stalls — try donkey-rolling roll (a yellow-rice pastry) or browse the tourist shops south of the resort for edible souvenirs.
- Ride a bus to the outer temples — take bus 118 north or bus 119 east to reach clusters of Buddhist and Tibetan-style temples ringing the city.

Things to See
- Eight Outer Temples — scattered north and east of the Mountain Resort, these elaborate temples fuse Han, Tibetan, and Mongolian styles and are part of the UNESCO listing.
- Mountain Resort (Bishu Shanzhuang) — a sprawling imperial palace-and-park complex with lakes, pagodas, and the original outer wall; the Qing emperors' summer seat.
- Chengde's old-city scale — walking end to end gives a feel for the hill-side layout and the way the resort dominates the town.

Best Time to Visit
- Late April through mid-July — the most pleasant window, with average temperatures around 20.6°C and light rain (2.4 mm per day).
- Early autumn (September–October) — traditionally a comfortable season across northern China, though specific climate data is limited; expect cooler, drier days.
- Avoid peak summer heat — temperatures can climb toward 39.1°C, making the outdoor temple circuit less comfortable; plan early-morning sightseeing if visiting then.

Planning Tips
- Carry small change for buses — fares are ¥2–3, no attendant, and drivers expect exact fare; T-Union cards and Alipay are accepted.
- Use a map app with bus support — Amap and similar apps display Chengde bus routes, which helps given the lack of English signage.
- Consider a shared taxi from Beijing — unofficial heiche cost about ¥150 and take 2–2½ hours, a faster door-to-door alternative to the bus.
- Plan at least a full day — the Mountain Resort alone merits half a day, and the outer temples add a second half-day circuit; an overnight stay is the comfortable minimum.
