About this place
Chelyabinsk is a major industrial city of over a million people, located just east of the Ural Mountains where European Russia meets Asia. It gained global attention in 2013 when a large meteor exploded in the atmosphere overhead, sending a powerful shockwave through the city. Today it balances its Soviet-era industrial heritage with a growing cultural scene and access to the wild landscapes of the Urals.
Visitors will find a city of contrasts, where factories and laborers shape daily life alongside a modern city center with parks, monuments, and a spacious railway station. The Miass River embankment offers a pleasant stretch for walking, and several green spaces provide a break from the urban landscape.

Planning Tips
- Make local contacts in advance through the VK social network or CouchSurfing community to help bridge the language gap.
- For airport arrivals, pre-arrange a taxi to avoid overcharging; official buses 1, 41, 45 and marshrutka 82 also serve the railway station.
- Consider flying into Yekaterinburg's larger Koltsovo airport and taking a frequent bus (3–4 hours) to Chelyabinsk.
- Download a local mapping app before arriving; 2Gis is highly recommended for navigating the bus and marshrutka network.
- When using marshrutkas, know your bus stop, signal the driver with a raised hand to board, and call out loudly when you want to get off at the next official stop.
- Keep cash on hand for marshrutka fares and other small purchases — pay the driver immediately upon boarding.
