About this place
Charleston is the largest and oldest city in South Carolina, with a historic downtown situated on a peninsula formed by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. The city is known for its well-preserved architecture spanning Colonial, Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, and Victorian styles, thanks to being the first in the U.S. to pass a historic preservation ordinance. Its low-rise skyline is dotted with church steeples, earning it the nickname "the Holy City," and is framed by the striking Arthur Ravenel Bridge.
Founded in 1670 as Charles Towne, the settlement moved to its current peninsular location by 1680. A colonial wall once protected the area now known as the French Quarter, remnants of which can be found beneath the Old Exchange Building. Charleston's history as a major port and a place that offered religious tolerance to French Huguenots and Jews is reflected in its diverse architectural and cultural heritage.
Today, Charleston offers visitors a blend of historic attractions, a thriving food scene, and a laid-back yet sophisticated atmosphere. The compact historic district is easily explored on foot or via free DASH shuttle routes, making it a convenient destination for a leisurely getaway.
