About this place
Kaiping (开平) is a pastoral county-level city in Guangdong province, set along the Tanjiang River about 140 km from Guangzhou. The area is famous for its diaolou — fortified watchtower dwellings built in the early 20th century by overseas Chinese — that blend Western and Eastern architecture across rice paddies and old-fashioned villages.
Part of the Jiangmen administrative region, Kaiping's urban center is compact and modern, but the real draw lies in the surrounding countryside. Hundreds of diaolou, several villages designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a landscape of farmlands and quiet lanes make it an exceptional destination for travelers interested in history, architecture, and rural life.

Things to Do

- Hike the Overseas Chinese Cultural Trail — a network of designated paths connects villages and towns around the main diaolou areas, letting you walk between sights.
- Hire a car for a half-day tour — drivers wait at the train station and will take you around the rural diaolou clusters for about ¥300 for five hours of sightseeing.

- Zilicun, Sanmenli, Majianglong, and Jinjiangli villages — these four diaolou clusters together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with restored watchtowers furnished as they were when occupied.
- Liyuan Garden — one of the most popular sites, often paired with Zilicun on a joint ticket; features manicured grounds and historic buildings.
- Xiangang (蚬冈镇) town streets — entire blocks lined with Baroque-style concrete facades, showcasing the architectural fusion brought back by overseas Chinese.
