About this place

Chandrapur, traditionally known as Chanda, sits in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra and takes its name from the historic Chanda Fort. Long governed by Gond kings and later the Marathas before becoming part of British India, the city today is often called the City of Black Gold because of the extensive coal mines that surround it.

Despite its industrial backbone, Chandrapur serves as a gateway to a broader district rich in ancient heritage, with nearby places like Bhadravati and Markanda hinting at centuries of Hindu and Buddhist influence. For leisure travelers, the city offers a glimpse of a working Maharashtrian center where history, mining culture, and regional life intersect.

Planning Tips

  • Reach via Nagpur — the nearest airport with scheduled flights is Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur; Chandrapur is also well connected by rail on the New Delhi–Chennai and New Delhi–Hyderabad–Bangalore lines.
  • Use MSRTC buses for regional travel — state-run buses link Chandrapur with cities including Nagpur, Amravati, Aurangabad, Nanded, and Hyderabad.
  • Dress for the season — lightweight cottons for the long hot season; a light jacket or shawl is sufficient for the short, mild winter.
  • Plan around the monsoon — June through September brings the bulk of annual rainfall; if traveling during these months, expect humidity and occasional heavy downpours.
