About this place
Chalcis (known locally as Chalkida) is the largest city on the island of Evvia and serves as its regional capital. Straddling the narrow Evripos Strait, the city is built on both the island and the mainland, connected by a pair of bridges — one of which is a distinctive old suspension bridge that opens daily.
Located about an hour from Athens, it makes a practical stopover or base for exploring Evvia's eastern beaches. The city itself offers a pleasant waterfront, a Venetian fortress, and a relaxed seaside character.
