About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Centurion is a city of about 237,000 residents located in South Africa's Gauteng province, wedged between Pretoria to the north and Midrand and Johannesburg to the south. It forms part of the Tshwane metropolitan area and sits on the Highveld, sharing the region's characteristic sunny winters and warm, thundery summers. The city is home to the Waterkloof Air Force Base and the Swartkop Air Force Base, the latter of which contains the South African Air Force Museum.

Formerly known as Lyttelton and later Verwoerdburg, Centurion adopted its current name after the end of Apartheid, taking inspiration from the local Centurion Park cricket stadium — now called SuperSport Park. The Hennops River runs through the city center, and the historic village of Irene lies within Centurion's boundaries, offering additional heritage and leisure attractions.
