About this place
Carúpano is a coastal city of about 174,000 people in Venezuela's Sucre state, considered the main commercial gateway to the Paria Peninsula. It holds a distinctive place in South American history — the surrounding area is thought to be the only part of the continent where Christopher Columbus set foot, and Simón Bolívar issued an early emancipation proclamation here.
The city serves as a practical base for exploring the peninsula's eastern reaches, and its shoreline is dotted with beaches that draw local visitors. While its airport no longer handles commercial flights, the road network makes it accessible for overland travelers.
