About this place
Once a small fishing village, Cannes is now a glamorous seaside town on the French Riviera, best known as the host of its world-famous film festival each May. The city combines high-end exclusivity with accessible pleasures — you can admire superyachts in the port, walk the iconic La Croisette beside designer boutiques, then escape into the winding cobblestone streets of the old Le Suquet quarter for panoramic views.
While nightlife, casinos, and luxury restaurants give Cannes a sophisticated feel, alternatives exist for a range of budgets. The covered market offers a spectacular food experience, and the islands in the bay provide a quieter beach day away from the private shorefront clubs.

Things to See
- La Croisette — Cannes' seaside catwalk, lined with luxury hotels and boutique shops. It is the center of tourist activity and a prime spot for people-watching.
- Le Suquet — The old town quarter with narrow winding streets, restaurants, and souvenir shops. Climb to the castle ruins at the top for an excellent view over the city and port.
- Palais des Festivals — The famous venue for the Cannes Film Festival at the end of La Croisette. Pose on the 22 steps leading to the entrance, then find the handprints of stars just in front.
- Îles de Lérins — Two islands in the bay. The larger, Ste Marguerite, offers a castle, shops, and quiet rocky coves. The smaller, St Honorat, has a monastery where monks sell their own wine and food products.
- Marché Forville (Covered Market) — A spectacular food market at the west end of rue Meynardiers, offering enormous scale and variety. Note that it was reported closed as of 2026.

Best Time to Visit
- May (Film Festival) — The city reaches its peak glamour during the Cannes Film Festival. Expect heavy crowds, elevated prices, and advance bookings for everything.
- June and early July — Enjoy warm weather and energetic streets without the extreme visitor volumes of August or the logistical intensity of the festival.
- September — Warm seas and more relaxed streets make early autumn appealing. Fewer crowds and still-plentiful sunshine reward travelers who can visit after the summer peak.
- Avoid August — This is the busiest month across the French Riviera. Transportation sells out, public beaches are at their most crowded, and lodging demands early reservations.
- Strike awareness — Two weeks before or after August, plan around possible labor strikes affecting public transit. Check news sources before buying tickets.

Planning Tips
- Book ahead in August — Transportation, accommodations, and services fill up during the peak month. Reserve well in advance.
- Use the train from Nice — Trains run every 30 minutes to an hour, take about 30 minutes, and offer stunning coastal views for around €9.40. Beware of stiff fines if you board without a valid ticket.
- Budget bus options — Regional bus 620 connects Nice Airport and Cannes every 15 minutes for just €2.50, though the journey takes around 90 minutes.
- Park strategically — Use off-street parking garages like Parking Fontville near the port and old town rather than hunting for street spaces.
- Check for strikes — Labor strikes are common in France and can disrupt transit with little notice, particularly in the weeks surrounding August.
