About this place

Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Cangzhou is a major city in southeastern Hebei province, counting over 7 million people across its wider area. It sits roughly 120 km south of Tianjin and 240 km from Beijing, acting as a southern gateway between the capital region and the coast. Strategic location and transport links — the city is threaded by the Beijing-Kowloon Railway, national highways, and the historic Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal — have long made it a crossroads for trade and culture.

Culturally, Cangzhou is famous as the Hometown of Martial Arts, the birthplace of Chinese acrobatics in Wuqiao County, and a nationally recognized calligraphy center. It is also the largest residential area for the Hui ethnic group in North China. In recent years, the city has earned a place on the sporting map as home to Cangzhou Lions Football Club, the first Chinese top-league club based here.

Things to Do

Last updated Jun 27, 2026
  • Watch an acrobatics performance — Wuqiao County is famed worldwide as the cradle of Chinese acrobatics. Look for shows or festivals that display the region's centuries-old tumbling and balancing traditions.
  • Seek out a martial arts demonstration — With over 50 boxing and weapon styles originating or spreading from here, Cangzhou is the first nationally designated “Hometown of Martial Arts.” Some schools and cultural events welcome curious visitors.
  • Walk or cycle along the Grand Canal — Cangzhou claims the longest stretch of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal of any city. Shared bicycles make it easy to ride the canal-side paths and enjoy the city scenery.
  • Catch a Cangzhou Lions match — For a modern dose of local energy, join the crowd at a Chinese Super League football game and cheer on the city’s top-league club.
