About this place

Last updated Jun 9, 2026

Cancún is a world-renowned beach resort destination on the northeast tip of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo. Built from scratch as a government tourism project in the 1970s, the city has grown into a major urban center of nearly 900,000 residents (2020) and serves as the gateway to the Mayan World. It offers a modern take on Mexican Caribbean vacations, with turquoise seas, powdery white beaches, and a wealth of vacation amenities.

The city is split into two distinct areas: the Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera), a harp-shaped strip of land packed with resorts, all-inclusive hotels, beaches, and nightlife; and City Center (El Centro), a more authentic Mexican urban area laid out in superblocks. Most international visitors spend their time in the Hotel Zone, while the downtown area provides a quieter, more local experience with restaurants, markets, and shopping.

While Cancún itself has little pre-1970s history, it is the ideal base for exploring the region's Mayan archaeological sites, from easily accessible ruins to those buried in the jungle. For travelers seeking a mix of beach relaxation, cultural excursions, and modern conveniences, Cancún delivers a polished, resort-oriented Caribbean escape.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 9, 2026
  • Book flights and hotels well in advance if traveling during peak season (December–April) to secure better rates.
  • Consider staying downtown for a more local, budget-friendly experience — beaches are a short bus or taxi ride away.
  • Avoid renting cars at the airport; local rental agencies in town often have better reviews and fewer deceptive practices.
  • Travelers driving should print out Quintana Roo's law requiring police to give tourists a verbal warning for minor infractions.
  • Use bank-owned ATMs inside banks or hotels to avoid fraud and high fees — always decline the ATM's offered exchange rate.
  • Telcel SIM cards are widely available and affordable for reliable cellular service — recharge at any OXXO convenience store.
  • Be aware of timeshare and tour sales pitches disguised as "free" offers; you are under no obligation to purchase.
