About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Campeche is a relaxed port city on the Gulf of Mexico and the capital of the state of Campeche. It has long been the second city of the Yucatán Peninsula after Mérida, and its meticulously preserved colonial old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of Campeche's most distinctive features is its intact city walls — it is one of only two cities in North America, along with Quebec City, where this historic fortification still stands.

The historic center is compact and best explored on foot, revealing pastel-colored architecture, quiet parks, and centuries-old churches. Outside the center, the city retains a laid-back, small-town feel even as it grows. Campeche also offers a strong culinary identity, with seafood — particularly shrimp and shark — at the heart of local dining.

  • Walk the city walls and historic center — Explore the old town on foot, tracing the fortifications and discovering photogenic streets, parks, and churches at your own pace.
  • Ride the Tren Maya — This new intercity rail route connects Campeche to major Yucatán destinations, archaeological sites, and nature preserves, making it easy to explore beyond the city.
  • Sample local seafood — Campeche is known for shrimp and shark dishes; try fresh coctelerías along the malecón or small restaurants in the center for authentic regional flavors.
  • Stroll the malecón — The coastal boulevard runs the length of the city along the Gulf, with seafood spots at the northern end that compete to offer free drinks or a ride back to the old town.

Planning Tips

  • Getting there by bus — Frequent ADO buses connect Campeche to Mérida (~2.5 hours) and Ciudad del Carmen (~2.75 hours); from Cancún the trip takes about 6.5 hours.
  • Getting around — Walking is best in the center, but taxis and cheap local buses (M$6) serve outlying areas; small bills are essential for bus fare.
  • Tren Maya connections — The new train station links to the city via an electric tram (Tren Ligero, M$18) and opens up day trips across the Yucatán Peninsula.
  • Dining strategy — Watch food preparation before choosing a restaurant, and explore Calle 59's pedestrian stretch for bar-restaurants with outdoor seating.
