About this place
Calama sits in the Antofagasta region of northern Chile, serving as the busiest transit hub for travelers bound for the Atacama Desert. While many visitors treat the city solely as a waypoint, the surrounding landscape offers stark desert beauty and a launching pad for self-guided exploration.
Gateway to the desert — the city is more functional than picturesque, but its connection to San Pedro de Atacama makes it an unavoidable stop on many northern Chile itineraries. Budget-conscious travelers often find cheaper food, lodging, and rental vehicles here compared to the resort towns deeper in the desert.

Things to Do
- Rent a 4WD and self-drive the region — pickup trucks are available for rent in Calama at much lower rates than in San Pedro de Atacama. A high-clearance vehicle opens up remote desert roads, salt flats, and high-altitude attractions that are otherwise accessible only by expensive guided tours.
- Visit the ruins and lagoon at Chiu-Chiu — about 35 km northeast of the city, this small village features archaeological remains, a tranquil lagoon, and several historic churches set against the desert backdrop.
- Explore the Lasana canyon — a surprisingly green oasis winding through the arid terrain, offering a striking contrast of lush vegetation amid rocky desert walls.
- Camp near the Geysers of Tatio — a rugged drive across the salt flats leads to this high-altitude geothermal field. Approaching from the north and camping overnight allows an early-morning, crowd-free experience before the tour buses arrive.

Best Time to Visit
- November through March — this warm-season window delivers the most comfortable daytime temperatures for desert exploration, with highs around 30.4°C and exceptionally low rainfall.
- Camping in the shoulder months — May brings extreme cold at altitude (as low as -15°C at night), so high-elevation overnight trips require serious cold-weather gear outside the peak warm season.

Planning Tips
- Get off the bus in the center — when arriving by bus, ask to be dropped near the central bus stops rather than at the Terminal de Buses on the outskirts, which requires a 1.5-km walk back into town for San Pedro connections.
- Sleep on the early bus — overnight buses from Arica or Iquique often arrive in the early morning hours; operators typically allow passengers to stay on board and rest a few more hours, saving a night's accommodation.
- Acclimatize before high altitudes — the Tatio Geysers sit at 4,200 m and the northern approach reaches nearly 4,700 m. Spend a day or two at intermediate elevation to reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
