About this place
Calabar is the capital of Cross River State in southeastern Nigeria, a city with a deep trading history and a remarkably relaxed feel. Set on a hill overlooking the Calabar River, it evolved from a 17th-century slave trade port into a major palm oil hub and later a key British colonial administrative center. Today, it stands as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful and welcoming destinations.
Visitors are drawn to its well-preserved colonial architecture in old neighborhoods like Henshaw Town and Duke Town, as well as its strong Efik cultural traditions. The city is perhaps best known for the Calabar Carnival, Africa’s largest street party, which transforms December into a month-long celebration of music, dance, and vibrant pageantry.
