About this place
Cajamarca sits in the northern highlands of Peru at about 2,700 m above sea level, home to roughly 100,000 people. It is best known as the place where the Inca Empire met its end — the Battle of Cajamarca and the capture of Emperor Atahualpa happened right here. Fertile volcanic soils support a strong dairy and cheese-making tradition, and the surrounding mountains hold one of the world’s largest gold mines.

Things to Do
- Baños del Inca — natural hot springs just 5 km east of town in Baños del Inca. Take a microbus marked Baños from the start of Avenida Atahualpa (S/2 fare). Entry about S/6; the swimming pool is closed Fridays.
- Cumbe Mayo — a pre-Colombian aqueduct built around 1000 BCE to channel water during dry months. Guided tours from Cajamarca cost around S/18 per person; the site sits at roughly 3,500 m and can be cold and wet.
- Ventanillas de Otuzco — a pre-Inca necropolis with tourist infrastructure and English information panels. Reach it by microbus from the market (look for Otuzco on the side, S/1 each way); allow 2–3 hours and consider combining it with a walk to Baños del Inca (about 1½ hours on foot).
- Waterfall outing at Catarata de Plan Manzanas — a local cascade about 9 km from Cajamarca. Microbuses to Huambocancha Alta pass the turn-off (S/1); ask villagers for the short trail and expect a roughly 30-minute walk each way through traditional farmland. Allow 3–4 hours total.

- Plaza de Armas churches — the historic heart holds several churches, including San Francisco with the “Ransom Room” where Inca Atahualpa was held captive by the Spanish.
- Santa Apolonia hill — climb the steps to the “Inca Seat,” from which the Inca is said to have addressed his subjects. The hilltop offers a sweeping view of Cajamarca below.
- Catarata de Plan Manzanas — a peaceful waterfall reached by a short walk through a traditional farming community; the trail crosses the top of the falls.
