About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Cainta is a bustling town in Rizal province that now blends seamlessly into the expanding eastern fringe of Metro Manila. Often called the gateway to the province, it serves as a residential and commercial hub where major highways converge, making it a practical base for reaching Antipolo, Taytay, and towns farther east.

The town carries a quiet historical footnote — Sepoy descendants trace their lineage to British Indian troops who stayed and intermarried locally during the brief 1760s occupation, leaving a distinctive mark on Cainta’s cuisine. Today Cainta is best known for its annual SumBingTik Festival and the everyday rhythms of life along Ortigas Extension and Marcos Highway.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • SumBingTik Festival — Held annually around December 1, this week-long celebration marks the town’s foundation and the feast of Our Lady of Light. Events include a street-dance parade, battle of the bands, paintball tournament, and the Miss Cainta beauty pageant.
  • Explore local food traditions — Cainta’s Sepoy heritage shows up in spicy, richly seasoned dishes. Seek out different eateries during the festival or on regular days to sample variations of suman, bibingka, and latik that give the SumBingTik festival its portmanteau name.
  • Street-dance and community events — If you are in town during the festival’s Caindakan sa Kalsada, watch colorful performances by school and community groups that animate the main streets with music and choreography.

  • December 1 for the festival — Time your visit to coincide with the SumBingTik Festival and the feast of Our Lady of Light for the town's most colorful local experience.
  • Late December to early May — These months offer warm, mostly dry weather ideal for exploring Cainta and nearby Rizal destinations without frequent rain interruptions.
  • Avoid the peak of the wet season — June through November brings heavy rainfall and a heightened risk of street flooding, making travel across town less predictable.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Use the LRT-2 — The Marikina-Pasig station beside Sta. Lucia Mall puts northern Cainta within easy reach of Manila's east–west rail line, helping you bypass some road congestion.
  • Budget extra travel time — Whether by jeepney, bus, or car, build generous margins into your itinerary; traffic builds quickly on Ortigas Extension, Marcos Highway, and local arteries.
  • Choose accommodation strategically — Staying near a jeepney terminal or the LRT-2 station makes everyday getting around simpler, especially if your plans include trips into Metro Manila.
  • Pack for wet conditions — If visiting during the rainy season, bring quick-dry clothing and waterproof footwear; parts of Cainta can flood with little notice.
