About this place
Cabo Frio is a lively coastal city in the state of Rio de Janeiro, popular with beachgoers and surfers from across southeast Brazil. Founded in the 16th century after the Portuguese expelled French settlers, it grew slowly for centuries before tourism and an influx of retirees transformed it into a sizable city with modern amenities.
Today Cabo Frio offers a wide sweep of sandy beaches, from the historic Fort Beach to wave-pounded surfing spots, plus excellent scuba diving where warm and cold currents converge just offshore.
