About this place
Cà Mau is the southernmost city on the Vietnamese mainland, deep in the Mekong Delta about 350 km southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. Canals thread through town, and much daily life still moves by boat and barge — a defining trait of this provincial capital of roughly 278,000 people.
For visitors, the city itself is compact and walkable, while the real draws lie just outside: vast U Minh wetlands and the mangrove-fringed tip of Vietnam at Đất Mũi. Come if you want a raw, off-the-beaten-path slice of delta life rather than polished tourism infrastructure.

Things to Do
- Đất Mũi National Park — Journey to the southernmost point of Vietnam by boat from Năm Căn (about 1½ hours) or overland by motorbike on a mix of paved and dirt roads; the mangrove-lined peninsula feels truly remote.
- U Minh Ho birding route — Ride a motorbike or bicycle roughly 26 km toward U Minh Hồ, where a paved road slices through banana groves toward mangrove canals alive with storks, kingfishers, and other waterbirds.
- Canal-watch in town — Stroll the central waterfront to see the working rhythm of boats unloading fruit, fish, and household goods at the city’s many small docks.

Things to See
- Lâm Viên Bird Park — Right in Cà Mau city, this small park shelters thousands of nesting birds; a quick, easy stop for wildlife without leaving town.
- U Minh National Park — A sprawling wetland reserve about 20 km from the city, best explored via the access road to the ranger station; watch for snakes, big lizards, and brilliantly colored birds along the mangrove-choked canals.
- Đất Mũi landmark — The national park at the very tip of the country features a symbolic monument marking mainland Vietnam’s southernmost reach, set amid dense mangroves.

Best Time to Visit
- December–April dry window — The most comfortable and reliable season, with temperatures around 26.8°C, little rain, and better road conditions for motorbike trips to U Minh.
- Shoulder weeks (late November or early May) — Can still deliver decent weather with fewer domestic travelers, though afternoon showers become possible.
- Avoid the height of the wet season — June through October sees frequent heavy rain that can disrupt boat journeys to Đất Mũi and make unpaved roads challenging.

Planning Tips
- Getting there — Sleeper buses from Ho Chi Minh City (around 205,000 đồng) are the main overland option; flights also serve Cà Mau Airport.
- Getting around the parks — Rent a motorbike or bicycle for U Minh trails; for Đất Mũi, a boat via Năm Căn is faster than road plus boat from Cà Mau.
- Pack for the tropics — Lightweight, quick-dry clothing, strong insect repellent, and a reliable rain jacket are essential year-round.
- Cash and connectivity — Carry enough đồng for several days; ATMs exist in town but are scarce near the national parks.
