About this place
Bytom is a city of contrasts in the Silesian Metropolis of southern Poland, just 7 km northwest of Katowice. Its roots go back to the 12th century, but today it's defined more by its 19th- and 20th-century industrial heritage than its medieval past. After the collapse of heavy industry, the city has been slowly reinventing itself, leaving a mix of historical churches, 19th-century workers' housing, and post-industrial brownfield sites waiting for new life.
While it won't be mistaken for Kraków, Bytom rewards curious travelers with its authentic, lived-in character. The compact historical centre around the market square holds centuries of history, while the outskirts reveal the scale of its mining past — from derelict winding towers to landscaped lagoons created by subsidence.

- Football — Catch a match with Polonia Bytom, who play in Poland's third tier at Edwarda Szymkowiaka Stadium northwest of the centre. For top-flight soccer, head to nearby Katowice.

- Market Square (Rynek) — The traffic-free heart of Bytom, centred on the 1873 "Sleeping Lion" statue commemorating locals who died in the Franco-Prussian War.
- Church of St Mary (Wniebowzięcia NMP) — Dating from the early 13th century with a Gothic exterior and largely Baroque interior, it dominates the northwest corner of the market square.
- Mater Dolorosa Cemetery — A 19th-century burial ground filled with artistic funerary monuments, open daily from 07:00 to 21:00 along the tram route on Piekarska.
- Krystyna winding tower — The striking derelict headframe of the former Szombierki coal mine, built between 1927–29 and now awaiting redevelopment.
- Bytom lagoons — A group of shallow lakes east of town, formed by mining subsidence and now landscaped for walking, fishing, and birdwatching.

- May–September — The most comfortable window for exploring, with warm temperatures, low rainfall, and long daylight hours. July and August bring the most sunshine.
- September (early) — Still pleasant weather with the added bonus of the City Half Marathon for those interested in local events.
- Winter (December–February) — Cold and grey, but the Christmas season brings atmosphere to the market square for travellers who don't mind the chill.

- Arriving by air — The closest airport is Katowice-Pyrzowice (24 km north), but Kraków's airport (80 km east) offers many more connections. Both require a transfer through Katowice.
- Getting around — The ZTM public transport network serves the entire Silesian Metropolis. Bus M3 runs every 15 minutes from Katowice through Chorzów to Bytom.
- Train connections — Frequent trains link Bytom with Katowice (30 min), Gliwice (16 min), and Tarnowskie Góry, making it easy to explore the wider region.
