About this place
Burhanpur is a history-rich city on the eastern bank of the Tapti River in Madhya Pradesh. Once a strategic capital under the Khandesh dynasty and later the Mughals, it served as a key administrative and cultural center in the Deccan for centuries. Shah Jahan spent considerable time here, and the city’s layered past stretches from Rashtrakuta rule through the Maratha and British eras.
Today, Burhanpur sees few international tourists, which makes it a rewarding stop for travelers who enjoy exploring Mughal and regional heritage without the crowds found in more famous destinations.
