About this place

Last updated Jul 26, 2026

Burgas is a lively port city on Bulgaria's southern Black Sea coast, framed by three large lakes and a wide bay. The city center sits on a peninsula with the Sea Garden park stretching along the eastern shore, while modern residential districts and industrial zones spread inland. With over 300,000 residents, it's Bulgaria's fourth-largest city and a key trade and transport hub.

Though less known than nearby beach resorts, Burgas offers a mix of coastal relaxation, bird-rich wetlands, and a growing festival scene. It serves as a convenient gateway to historic towns like Nesebar and Sozopol and the busy Sunny Beach resort area, while retaining an authentic working-city feel.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 26, 2026
  • North Beach water sports — Surfing and kite-surfing are popular on the bay; several schools on North Beach offer lessons and equipment rental. Diving trips can also be booked here.
  • St. Anastasia Island boat trips — Boats depart from the Bridge in July and August (10:00, 12:00, 14:00) for the small island visible from the Burgas beach, formerly known as Bolshevik Island.
  • Birdwatching on the Burgas lakes — The three lakes (Vaya, Atanasovsko, and Mandrensko) lie on the Via Pontica migration route. Over 250 bird species can be spotted, especially during autumn migration.
  • Quad bike and ATV safari — Operators like PH QUADS run guided off-road tours in the hills around Marinka, a village between Burgas and Sozopol.
  • Sea Garden strolls and the Flora exhibition — The seaside park hosts the annual Flora international flower show in late April–May, with many displays staying through summer. Paths lead north to the salt-pans and a small tourist train.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 26, 2026
  • Troika Square and the Fine Arts Gallery — The city center revolves around this square, where a secession-style former synagogue houses the Gallery of Fine Arts.
  • St Kiril and Metodii Church — A centrally located church reflecting Burgas's role as a historic trade city open to diverse faiths. The Armenian church nearby adds another architectural layer.
  • Atanasovsko Lake salt-pans — North of the city, the lake's high-salinity waters support active salt production. A small train crosses the pans, and the area is a prime birdwatching site with restricted-access nature reserves.
  • Vaya (Burgas) Lake — Bulgaria's largest natural lake sits just west of the city. Though not suitable for swimming, it draws fishermen and birders, with carp fishing a local pastime.
  • Poda birdwatching zone — Located beside Mandrensko Lake, this protected area is a dedicated spot for observing birds and sparrows along the migration route.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 26, 2026
  • Getting around — Public buses and trolleys run from 05:00 to 23:00; a single ride costs 1.50 лв. Mini-buses cover additional routes at 1.10 лв, payable to the driver when exiting.
  • Taxis and safety — Use licensed taxi companies only and watch the meter. Scam drivers are common in summer; tariffs should be around 0.80–0.90 лв per km.
  • Money exchange — The normal rate is about 1.94 лв; avoid street exchangers offering unusually high rates or traders pushing overpriced fruit.
  • Airport access — Burgas Airport is in the Sarafovo neighborhood, northeast of the center. Public bus line 15 connects Sarafovo to the city center in about 20 minutes, though taxi fares from Sarafovo can add up.
  • Accommodation alternatives — Private homestays are often advertised by locals at the train and bus stations in summer. Language barriers exist but can offer a budget-friendly, traditional stay.
