About this place
Buon Ma Thuot is the rapidly developing capital of Daklak Province, located in Vietnam's Central Highlands. Far from the typical coastal tourist circuit, it offers a look at authentic Vietnamese city life driven by internal investment rather than foreign tourism. The city is famously the heart of Vietnam's coffee industry, and its streets are lined with excellent cafes.
As a travel destination, it's an ideal base for exploring nearby natural and cultural attractions like Yok Don National Park, Ban Don Village, and Lak Lake. While there are few conventional tourist sites, the friendly local atmosphere and great food make it a rewarding stop for those looking to get off the beaten track.

Things to Do
- Visit Ban Don Village — a traditional village accessible by a frequent local bus from the Coop Mart. Elephant rides, once a draw, have been discontinued, so the focus is now on the cultural and natural setting.
- Explore Yok Don National Park — Buon Ma Thuot is an excellent jumping-off point for this expansive protected area, offering opportunities for trekking and wildlife viewing in the dry forest landscape.
- Coffee tasting tour — as the capital of Vietnamese coffee, the city is packed with cafes. Visit the Trung Nguyen flagship coffee gardens just east of town, a large pleasure garden with coffee trees, a man-made mountain, and a waterfall.
- Cycle around the city — the city is compact and flat, making it highly bikeable. Rent a bicycle and explore at your own pace to see daily life away from the main roads.
- Sample local rice wine — seek out and drink the local brew 'ruou can', a traditional fermented rice wine often drunk communally from a jar using long bamboo straws.

- Trung Nguyen Coffee Gardens — more than just a cafe, this flagship location is a themed pleasure garden with coffee trees, a waterfall, and buildings designed in traditional Viet and Ede architectural styles.
- Central roundabout area at night — as the city comes alive in the evening, the streets just northwest of the main roundabout transform into a vibrant hub of street food stalls and small local restaurants.

Planning Tips
- Use written maps for taxis — since most drivers don't speak English, prepare detailed written notes for your destination or be ready to show them locations on your smartphone.
- Catch the Ban Don bus at Coop Mart — to secure a seat on the frequent bus to Ban Don Village, don't try to board mid-route. Wait at the Coop Mart where the bus starts its journey, as it often fills up.
- Beware of booking scams — when booking bus tickets online through platforms like vexere.com, be vigilant for scams. Only use verified, official hotlines to avoid high phone charges and wasted time.
- Verify your driver's license — if you plan to rent a motorbike or car, confirm beforehand whether your home driver's license is considered valid for driving in Vietnam.
- Book faster express buses — choose services like the Mai Linh Express hunter green Mercedes Sprinters for a significantly more comfortable and faster journey, such as the 3.5-hour trip to Nha Trang.
