About this place
Bukhara is a historic Silk Road city with a remarkably preserved Old Town that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once a major religious and cultural centre, its architectural heyday came under the Shaybanid dynasty in the 16th century, when it was adorned with medressas, mosques, and covered bazaars. Today about 280,000 people live here, and while the suburbs are modern, the compact heart of the city is a pedestrian-friendly treasure.
Reaching Bukhara is straightforward, with fast rail connections from Tashkent and Samarkand, as well as bus services and shared taxis from around the region. Most of the main sights cluster around the Lyab-i-Hauz ensemble and the Kalyan complex, making exploration on foot easy and rewarding.

Things to Do
- Attend a football match — FC Bukhara play in the Pro League at Buxoro Arena, 2 km south of the centre, with a season running March to November.
- Browse the trading domes — Toqi Sarrafon, Toqi Telpak Furushon, and Toqi Zaragon were specialist bazaars and now sell a mix of crafts and souvenirs in beautiful covered spaces.
- Visit the Central Bazaar — A large covered market near the Chashma-Ayub Mausoleum, open daily 07:30–18:00, offering a wide variety of local goods.
- Walk the compact Old Town — The pedestrianised historic centre is best explored on foot, with routes taking in the main squares, back lanes, and caravanserais.

- Ulugbek Madrassah — Built in 1417, this is a rare Timurid-era survivor, now flanked by the Abdulaziz Khan Madrassah which houses craft stalls.
- Ark Citadel area — The Shukhov Tower, a 1929 water tank with a basket-weave frame, offers an observation deck and restaurant; the nearby Talipach Gate is a medieval city-wall remnant.

Best Time to Visit
- April to early June — Comfortable average temperatures around 24.1°C, very low rainfall, and abundant sunshine make this the most pleasant window for sightseeing.
- March and October — Cooler shoulder months with fewer visitors, though temperatures can be lower and there's a higher chance of rain.
- Avoid July and August — Extreme daytime heat, reaching 45°C, can make exploring difficult.
- Winter (December–February) — Cold temperatures near 0.6°C and minimal tourist infrastructure make this the least appealing season for most travellers.

Planning Tips
- Book trains ahead — Trains to Samarkand, Tashkent, and Khiva can sell out; check schedules and buy tickets in advance.
- Use ride apps — Order taxis through your accommodation or apps like Yandex to avoid inflated fares, especially for airport or late station arrivals.
- Budget for tourist tax — Non-citizen hotel guests pay about US$4 per person per night extra, often not included in quoted room rates.
- Carry cash in som — Markets and smaller traders operate in Uzbek som, and haggling is expected for carpets and souvenirs.
- Pick your base well — Staying in or near the pedestrianised Old Town cuts down on transport and lets you see the main sights at a leisurely pace.
