About this place
Bucharest, Romania's capital and largest city, is a dynamic metropolis where the old and new sit side by side. A 300-year-old church may stand in the shadow of a steel-and-glass tower next to a communist-era building—a mix that defines the city's character. Known in the past as "The Little Paris," Bucharest has undergone a notable transformation in recent years, thanks in part to EU-funded projects that have revitalized neighborhoods like the revamped old town. With more than 2.1 million inhabitants in its urban area, it ranks among the largest cities in Southeastern Europe and serves as the country's primary entry point, industrial hub, and commercial center.
Today, Bucharest offers a sophisticated, modern sensibility with a rapidly evolving skyline. Major infrastructure projects, such as the impressive Basarab overpass—Europe's widest cable bridge—are reshaping the city. Travelers will find a fascinating blend of history, culture, and contemporary energy, all within a city that is far safer than many other European capitals. Whether exploring the revamped historic center or admiring the mix of architectural styles, visitors are likely to be surprised by the changes taking place here.
