About this place

Last updated Jun 9, 2026

Brooklyn is one of the five boroughs of New York City, located on the westernmost point of Long Island. It shares a land boundary with Queens to the north, east, and south, while Manhattan lies across the East River to the west and north. Once a separate city, Brooklyn retains a distinct identity and is home to about 2.5 million people — if it were a city on its own, it would be the 4th most populous in the United States.

Brooklyn is experiencing a sustained period of growth and affluence. The Brooklyn Academy of Music offers world-class theater, and Barclays Center hosts the NBA's Brooklyn Nets. Downtown Brooklyn has undergone extensive redevelopment with upscale boutiques, public spaces, and Brooklyn Bridge Park providing stunning views of the Manhattan skyline. Prospect Park, a national historic site designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, is celebrated as his preferred creation over Central Park.

The borough is a tapestry of distinct cultural neighborhoods: Williamsburg is known as a hub for hipster culture, Brighton Beach is home to New York's largest Russian community, and the 8th Avenue area hosts a vibrant Chinatown. Yet alongside new development, Brooklyn is filled with old gems — family-owned brick-oven pizzerias, dive bars unchanged since the 1950s, and historic neighborhoods with buildings dating to Dutch colonial times.
