About this place
Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, is Australia's third-largest city with a population of around 2.2 million in the greater region. Known affectionately as Brissie, it's a 'garden metropolis' famous for its leafy open spaces, iconic river, and relaxed pace of life. Large enough to be cosmopolitan yet small enough to feel friendly and accessible, Brisbane's year-round warm climate and spectacular scenery have made it the fastest-growing city in Australia.
Brisbane gained international exposure through major sporting events and political summits, and is set to host the 2032 Summer Olympics. The city's youthful enthusiasm and forward-thinking attitude are paired with a rich history, from its origins as a penal settlement to its role as a World War II command center. Today, Brisbane is a hub for strong immigration, both domestic and international, driven by pleasant weather, good employment opportunities, and a more affordable housing market than other Australian capitals.

Best Time to Visit
- Fall (March–May) is the sweet spot – This is widely considered the best time to visit, especially for those not used to humidity. Expect comfortable, dry, and sunny weather with daytime temps between 20°C and 30°C.
- Spring (September–November) is also excellent, with warming days, fresh sea breezes, and similar comfortable conditions as autumn.
- Winter (June–August) offers cool, sunny, and cloudless days. Highs reach around 25°C, making it a pleasant time for sightseeing, though nights can be cool.
- Summer (December–February) is hot, humid, and stormy. It's the low season for comfort but offers vibrant festivals and long daylight hours (sunrise as early as 4:45 AM).

Planning Tips
- Tipping is not expected – Tipping is not part of the local culture. A simple 'thank you' is sufficient for good service.
- Use public transport – With a flat 50-cent fare for most journeys (excluding airport trains), Translink's trains, buses, and ferries are an incredibly affordable way to get around. Use contactless credit/debit cards or a Go card.
- Stay sun-safe – The Queensland sun is extreme. Always wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, even on overcast days or in winter. Drink plenty of water.
- Watch for parking restrictions – CBD roads become clearways at 4 PM, and parking on the street near a yellow line will result in a fine and towing. Use parking stations or check signs carefully.
- Book an early-bird parking deal – If driving into the city, arrive before 9 AM and leave after 4 PM for parking around $15, versus $40 for casual day parking.
- Free WiFi is plentiful – Complimentary internet is available at all Brisbane City Council libraries, most Telstra payphones, and many cafes, restaurants, and shopping malls.
- Carry ID for nightlife – The legal drinking age is 18. A foreign passport or Australian driver's license is required for entry to bars and clubs. Student cards are not accepted.
