About this place
Bradford is a large, diverse city in West Yorkshire, whose history is woven deeply into the textile industry. The 19th-century wool boom left a legacy of Victorian mills and grand neo-Gothic architecture, while later immigration from Pakistan has shaped its modern culture and cuisine. Its built-up area merges with Leeds to the east, and the Pennine valleys of "Bronte Country" stretch away to the west.
Recent regeneration has brought new life to the city, anchored by the National Science and Media Museum since the 1980s, and a growing film tourism scene. Though the city continues to evolve, it offers a blend of industrial heritage, cultural diversity, and easy access to literary landscapes.

Things to See
- The 'Bronte Country' villages — Explore Thornton, just west of the city, where the Brontë sisters were born at 74 Market Street, and see the remains of the 'Bell Chapel'. Five miles further, Haworth is where they grew up and launched their literary careers.
- National Science and Media Museum — This museum transformed central Bradford into a tourist destination from 1983 and remains a key attraction, focusing on the science and culture of light and sound technologies.
- Victorian architecture — Discover impressive neo-Gothic public buildings and vast former mill complexes that reflect the city's rapid 19th-century growth.

Planning Tips
- Getting from the airport — Buses 737 and 747 connect Bradford Interchange to Leeds Bradford Airport every 30 minutes, taking about 50 minutes. For long-haul flights, Manchester Airport is a better option, with a train journey of 1 hour 40 minutes via Huddersfield.
- Use buses for local travel — The city is well served by buses; the X6 runs to Leeds every 10 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays, and National Express coaches connect to London and other major cities.
- Base yourself for Brontë adventures — Thornton and Haworth are a short bus or car ride away, making Bradford a practical and less touristy base for literary exploration.
- Stay central for safety — The city centre is well-policed and generally trouble-free, but use common sense and avoid areas like Lidget Green, Manningham, and Low Moor after dark.
