About this place
Bournemouth is a classic English seaside resort with a modern, energetic twist. Its 7 miles of golden sandy beaches have held Blue Flag status for decades, drawing visitors with clean seas, a lively pier, and a backdrop of pine-fringed gardens once celebrated for their health-giving air. A growing community of students, surfers, and creatives has added a bohemian edge to the town, moving well beyond the retirement cliché.
The town balances a thriving café and restaurant scene with a famously vibrant nightlife — over 50 clubs and bars draw large crowds, particularly on weekends. Cultural draws range from the Arts by the Sea festival to Victorian architecture in Boscombe and boutique shopping in Westbourne.

- September to early October — Still mild with comfortable sea temperatures; the Arts by the Sea festival provides a cultural draw as summer crowds thin out.
- Avoid midday arrivals in summer — Traffic on the A31 can be extremely slow on hot afternoons; plan an early start or an overnight stay if driving.

Planning Tips
- Getting in — Direct trains run from Manchester and Birmingham on CrossCountry, and National Express coaches connect from London Victoria in about 2½ hours; Bournemouth Airport has no train station but shuttle buses operate.
- Getting around — The town is walkable, but it is an uphill 10–15 minutes from the station to the centre; local blue More buses cover the Bournemouth–Christchurch–Poole area with main stops at the station and the Square.
- Accommodation location — West Cliff has upmarket hotels near the International Centre and seafront; the Triangle is close to nightlife and the gay village; Westbourne is quieter and boutique-filled.
- Safety at night — Stick to well-lit main streets and travel in groups very late, especially around Old Christchurch Road bar areas; stag and hen parties are loud but rarely threatening.
