About this place

Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Bloemfontein, poetically known as the city of roses, serves as the judicial capital of South Africa and the seat of the Free State Province. Founded in 1846, this compact city of around half a million people blends historical significance with modern suburban growth. It’s also quietly notable as the birthplace of J.R.R. Tolkien in 1892.

The city center is walkable and safe during the day, though much of the local energy has shifted toward shopping and entertainment hubs like the Waterfront and Mimosa Mall, as well as the restaurant-lined Second Avenue. Despite its modest size, the city hosts sub-Saharan Africa's first digital planetarium and an observatory erected by Harvard University.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 27, 2026
  • Hire a car for flexibility — With limited public transport, your own vehicle is the best way to explore the city, its suburbs, and nearby game reserves.
  • Dine before 7:30 PM — Restaurants often serve early, especially on weeknights; arriving late can mean rushed service or closed kitchens.
  • Check the mall craft market schedule — A craft market operates near the Waterfront on the first Saturday of the month, ideal for local souvenirs.
  • Be mindful of quiet Sundays — Many shops close for all of Sunday and Saturday afternoons, so plan any shopping needs for weekday mornings.
  • Steer clear of the railway areas — For a hassle-free visit, avoid the area near the train station and east of the railway lines, particularly after dark.
