About this place
Biysk is a city of about 200,000 people in Altai Krai, best known as the last major stop on the Chuysky Highway before the Altai Mountains. Its historic core, compact and walkable, preserves 19th-century merchant houses and a distinctive Lenin statue adapted for Siberian winters.
Founded as a frontier fort in 1709, the city sits on the banks of the Biya River in gently hilly terrain. Today it carries the naukograd (science city) designation and serves as a practical gateway for travelers heading toward the Mongolian border and the Altai Republic.
