About this place

Last updated Jul 13, 2026

Birkenhead sits on the Wirral peninsula across the River Mersey from Liverpool. Once a shipbuilding powerhouse — its population peaked as the 20th largest town in England in 1921 — it is now home to around 89,000 people. While not a major tourist destination, it rewards a half-day trip with waterfront panoramas, a historic park, and a famous ferry crossing.

The town holds a surprising link to New York: landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted visited Birkenhead Park in 1850 and later incorporated many of its features into his design for Central Park. Today that pioneering green space remains the town's centrepiece.
