About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Bilbao is the largest city in Spain's Basque Country, home to about 350,000 people and a metro area of over a million. It is one of the best places in the world to experience the ancient Basque culture and language, which has endured for thousands of years and feels entirely distinct from any other modern European culture. The city sits on the banks of the Nervión River, surrounded by green hills that reflect its milder, rainier climate — a welcome relief from the dry heat of southern Spain but often a challenge for beach days.

Getting around is straightforward thanks to an excellent public transport network. The Norman Foster-designed Metro is clean and efficient, while buses, a single-line tram, and suburban trains connect the center to surrounding towns. A Barik card makes multi-journey travel cheaper and easier across most services. Walking between major sights like the Guggenheim Museum and the Casco Viejo takes about half an hour along the riverside.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Get a Barik card — buy one at any metro or train station (€3) and load credit; it works on metro, bus, tram, and regional trains and costs less per ride than single tickets.
  • Pack for rain — even in summer, showers are frequent; a waterproof jacket and comfortable walking shoes are essential.
  • Fly into Bilbao Airport — the Bizkaibus A3247 runs from arrivals to the city center (near the Guggenheim and Gran Vía) for around €4.50; a taxi costs roughly €25–30.
  • Book ferries early — the Brittany Ferries service from Portsmouth, England, tends to sell out in summer, so reserve well ahead.
