About this place
Bielefeld is a city of around 300,000 people in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is perhaps best known within Germany for a long-running internet meme playfully insisting the city does not exist — a tongue-in-cheek conspiracy theory that has become the one thing almost everyone associates with the name.
Behind the joke is a real destination with a long history: the settlement was first mentioned in the 9th century and received its city charter in a 1214 document. While much of the old town was destroyed during World War II, several historic buildings remain, giving visitors a mix of reconstructed heritage and modern life. Its position in the northwest of the country makes it an easy stop between the Ruhr area, Hanover, and the greater Cologne region.

Things to Do
- Catch an Arminia Bielefeld match — The local football club plays in 3. Liga at Bielefelder Alm, a 27,300-capacity ground about 1 km northwest of the city centre. Game days are a great way to experience local fan culture.

Things to See
- Surviving historic buildings — Although WWII destroyed much of the old town, a few pre-war structures remain. Seek out the older architectural pockets scattered through the centre to glimpse the city's medieval and early-modern past.
- Stadtbahn network — The light-rail system itself is part of the city's fabric. Using it to move between neighbourhoods often reveals more of daily life and the city's layout than a single landmark can.

Planning Tips
- Use the Stadtbahn — Tickets are integrated across bus and light rail and operate on a proof-of-payment system. Buy before boarding to avoid fines.
- Arrive by train — The city is on the national rail network, making it a straightforward journey from Hanover, the Ruhr, or Cologne without needing a car.
- Embrace the meme — Locals are well aware of the 'Bielefeld doesn't exist' joke and often lean into it with good humour. You might spot references or puns around town.
