About this place

Last updated Aug 22, 2026

Bhadrāvati is a major industrial city in central Karnataka, straddling the banks of the Bhadra River roughly 25 km from Shivamogga. Once known as Benkipura — "a very hot place" — it remains defined by its heavy-industry backbone, anchored by the Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant (VISL) and the Mysore Paper Mills (MPM).

Travelers pass through for business or as a launching point into the surrounding Malenadu region, where the terrain shifts from factory yards to forested hills. The town center is compact, with private buses and auto rickshaws making short-distance movement cheap and straightforward.
