About this place
Benxi, in Liaoning province, serves as the gateway to one of China’s most striking natural wonders — the Benxi Water Caves (Benxi Shuidong National Park). Located about 30 km east of the city center, this park protects a vast, ancient cavern system carved over millions of years and now illuminated with colored lights.
The park’s centerpiece is a 5 million-year-old cavern through which a river runs for 3,000 meters. Wide and deep enough for dozens of boats, the underground waterway offers a unique, cool-weather escape during warmer months. The city itself acts as a practical launch point, with straightforward road and rail connections to the caves and surrounding region.

Best Time to Visit
- Late April through late July — the season’s combination of moderate outdoor temperatures and low rainfall makes for comfortable travel to and from the caves.
