About this place

Last updated Jun 10, 2026

Belo Horizonte (often called "BH" by locals) is Brazil's sixth-largest city and the capital of the state of Minas Gerais. Founded in 1897 as a planned city to replace Ouro Preto as the state capital, it features a neat grid of broad avenues intersected by diagonal streets. With a metropolitan population of over 5 million, it's a bustling metropolis that serves as a hub for exploring the beautiful colonial towns of Minas Gerais, such as Ouro Preto and Tiradentes.

Set at an elevation of 852 meters (about 2,795 feet) in the center of the state, the city enjoys mild temperatures with few extremes. Its layout, hills, and lively bar scene give BH a distinct character, while its role as a major transport junction makes it easy to reach by bus, car, or plane from other Brazilian capitals.
