About this place
Belém sits at the mouth of the Amazon River in northern Brazil, serving as the lively capital of Pará state. As a gateway to the Amazon, the city blends a bustling river port with rich history dating back to its founding in 1616. The Rubber Boom of the late 19th century left a legacy of elegant colonial architecture, still visible in the Cidade Velha and Campinas districts.
The city is a fascinating synthesis of Amazonian and indigenous cultures, reflected especially in its distinctive cuisine. Every October, Belém hosts one of the world's largest Catholic processions, the Círio de Nazaré, a spectacular event that draws huge crowds. The waterfront area, with its revived docks and traditional markets, remains the vibrant heart of the city.

Planning Tips
- Pack light, breathable clothing and be prepared to change frequently due to heat and humidity. An umbrella is essential for both sun and rain.
- Be cautious after dark, particularly along Avenida Presidente Vargas and its back streets. Avoid displaying jewelry or cameras openly.
- For accommodation, the area around the bus terminal (São Bráz) is generally more relaxed than the central Avenida Presidente Vargas area.
- Taxis offer a flat-rate option that can be negotiated. The driver's initial "friendly" price can be significantly higher than the regular fare.
- The huge bus terminal at São Bráz serves both long-distance coaches and chaotic but extensive local bus routes.
- Don't miss local specialties like tacacá, pato no tucupi, and regionally flavored ice creams at establishments like Sorveteria Cairú.
- Even though it's one of the rainiest cities, Belém is also very sunny; strong sun protection is necessary when exploring outdoor sites.
