About this place

Belgaum (officially Belagavi) is a city of layered history and cultural mingling in northwestern Karnataka. Straddling routes between Goa and Maharashtra, it has long been a meeting point of languages, cuisines, and traditions. Its historic fort and numerous temples reflect centuries of rule by Kadamba kings, the Mysore sultanate, and the British, giving the city a distinct character within Karnataka.

Known locally as Kundanagari after its signature milk sweet, Belgaum serves as Karnataka’s winter capital. The hill-town setting keeps the climate moderate, making it a comfortable base for exploring the surrounding Ghats. Travelers will find a mix of Kannada and Marathi culture here, plus notable Goan influences in the food and drink.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Trek the Amboli and Jamboti Ghats — forested trails in the Western Ghats hills south and west of the city, best tackled after the monsoon when the greenery peaks.
  • Go white-water rafting on the Kali River — the rapids at Dandeli are the main draw; operators run half‑day and full‑day trips during the post‑monsoon season.
  • Sample Belgaum’s famous Kunda sweet — this milk-based confection is the city’s signature, found in sweet shops across Camp and the city centre.
  • Join a paragliding session — local NCC‑affiliated operations occasionally offer tandem flights outside the monsoon months; arrange through adventure sports contacts in town.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Belgaum Fort — the 12th‑century stone fort has been re‑worked by successive dynasties; within its walls you’ll find the Kamal Basti temple and the Sri Ramakrishna Mission Ashram, plus a watchtower with panoramic views.
  • Kamal Basti and the Cantonment churches — the fort’s Jain temple is the historic centre‑piece, while St. Mary’s, St. Xavier’s Catholic Cathedral and St. Anthony’s Church sit in the leafy Cantonment area.
  • Kapileshwar, Shani and Maruti temples — these well‑known Hindu shrines draw steady streams of worshippers and offer a look at local temple architecture.
  • Masjid‑Sata mosque and Mahadeva temple — the 16th‑century mosque and the temple with its ornamental gardens round out Belgaum’s religious landmarks.

Best Time to Visit

  • Late January to mid‑May — the longest dry window: average temperatures around 25.7°C, very low rainfall, and plenty of sunshine. Ideal for fort and temple visits.
  • Late October and November — shorter but comfortable post‑monsoon stretch; temps drop to about 22.7°C and the countryside is still lush.
  • Avoid July to September — the southwest monsoon deluges the city, making trekking, paragliding and even city walks difficult; some rural roads may become impassable.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Book Ghats activities in the dry windows — trekking in Jamboti/Amboli and rafting at Dandeli are safest and most enjoyable from late October through mid‑May.
  • Use buses and autorickshaws locally — city buses charge around ₹10, and autos are plentiful; negotiate the fare before you get in since meters are rare.
  • Reserve rail and long‑distance bus tickets early — Belgaum lies on the busy Mumbai–Bengaluru corridor and sleeper trains fill up quickly during festivals and school holidays.
  • Dress for both temples and rain — carry a light shawl or scarf for religious sites and a reliable rain jacket if your dates overlap with the monsoon margins.
