About this place
Downtown Beirut is the central district of the capital, defined by its outdoor cafes, restaurants, and high-end designer stores. The inner area around Nejmeh Square is pedestrian-only, making it a pleasant place to stroll, people-watch, and enjoy the blend of historic and modern architecture. Ashrafieh is to its east, while Hamra, Ras Beirut, Manara, and Rawcheh lie to the west, and the Beirut Marina and Corniche are just a short walk away.
This district is the historic core of the city, where Roman, Byzantine, Crusader, Mamluke, and Ottoman landmarks stand alongside contemporary shops and cafes. Some visitors note that the area can feel over-priced and that it caters more to tourists from the Persian Gulf than to locals, but its central location and walkable layout make it a convenient base for exploring Beirut.
