About this place
Beihai is a rapidly growing coastal city in Guangxi, southwest China, centered around Beibuwan Square and its iconic Pearl of the South monument. It's known for Silver Beach, an excellent stretch of coastline, and a lively food scene with abundant, affordable seafood and Vietnamese-influenced dishes. The Qiaogang area is home to ethnic Chinese who resettled from Vietnam, adding a unique cultural layer. While not heavily frequented by international visitors, the city has a small but active expat community. English is not widely spoken, so knowing some Mandarin or Cantonese can be helpful.

Planning Tips
- Learn a few phrases in Mandarin or Cantonese — English is not widely spoken, so knowing basic greetings, numbers, and food-related terms will greatly improve your experience.
- Use Didi for reliable rides — The Didi ride-hailing app is common and straightforward, helping avoid haggling with motorbike taxis or tricycles.
- Bring cash or Alipay — Many small vendors and bus drivers require exact change, while share bikes and larger businesses often accept Alipay.
- Check room conditions before paying — Especially at budget hotels, verify air-conditioning and heating availability and ask for a discount, as winter heating may not always be provided.
- Plan intercity travel around the new bus terminal — Be aware that the main long-distance bus hub is moving to a larger facility on the city outskirts, replacing older central terminals.
