About this place
Batu is a cool, green hill station on the slopes of Mount Welirang in East Java, a world away from the tropical heat of the lowlands. Sitting between 800 and 1,100 meters, it offers fresh mountain air, apple orchards, and easy access to scenic villages — a popular weekend escape for city-dwellers from nearby Malang and Surabaya.
The town expanded during the Dutch colonial era as a retreat for merchants and remains a laid-back destination today. It is compact and walkable, with casual strolls through the countryside as rewarding as the high-altitude treks up the nearby volcanic massif.

Things to Do
- Trek Mount Arjuna and Mount Welirang — a challenging 3-day expedition across a volcanic massif with stunning summit views and an active crater on Welirang. Starts at Selecta village and requires a guide; overnight in basic shelters with near-freezing nighttime temperatures.
- Casual walking and countryside rambles — the landscape around Batu and Selecta is lush and scenic, perfect for easy walks and discovering orchards, villages, and viewpoints at your own pace.
- Visit the theme and amusement parks — Batu has grown into a family-friendly destination with several newer parks spread across the area; comfortable shoes and a couple of days make it practical to explore them all.

Things to See
- Selecta hill resort — a purpose-built mountain retreat dating to 1928, set on the slopes of Mount Arjuna with manicured gardens and a cool, relaxing atmosphere.
- Apple and orchid farms — the cool climate makes Batu the country's main apple-producing centre; roadside stalls and orchards are part of the local scenery.
- Surrounding villages — small, charming settlements in the hills around Batu offer a quiet, traditional contrast to the town itself and are easy to explore on foot.

Best Time to Visit
- Late May to mid-October — the best weather window for clear skies and comfortable hiking, with average temperatures around 22.3°C and minimal rainfall.
- Weekdays outside school holidays — visiting midweek avoids the biggest weekend crowds from Surabaya and Malang and can mean better hotel deals.
- Avoid Indonesian school holidays and long weekends — these periods see heavy domestic tourism and can make the area feel crowded and congested.

Planning Tips
- Getting there from Malang or Surabaya — take a 2-hour train from Surabaya to Malang, then a 45-minute ride-hail (GrabCar or GoCar) or shuttle bus to Batu.
- Allow 2–3 days to explore — the growing number of theme parks and attractions means a short stay only scratches the surface; a few days gives time to mix parks, walks, and local flavours.
- Sample apple specialities — dried apple chips and the local apple cake dodol are signature treats worth trying and make good travel snacks.
- Pack layers for mountain treks — overnight temperatures on the peaks can drop to 3°C; a warm sleeping bag and proper clothing are essential for the Arjuna–Welirang trek.
