About this place
Batna is a major city in Northeast Algeria and the capital of Batna Province, with a population of around 340,000 making it the country’s fifth-largest urban center. It serves as a practical base for exploring some of Algeria’s most impressive Roman ruins and the rugged Aurès mountains.
The city itself offers a mix of amusement parks, local gold markets, and a dining scene focused on grills and cafés. Many travelers use Batna as a gateway to the UNESCO-listed Timgad, one of the best-preserved Roman towns in North Africa, located just 35 km away.

Planning Tips
- Getting in — Air Algérie links Batna with Algiers and several French cities (Lyon, Marseille, Paris Orly), with a seasonal Paris CDG route; trains from Algiers take roughly 6–7 hours.
- Getting around — taxis are the most popular choice, with local drivers and the Yassir ride-hailing app available; buses are cheaper but keep a close eye on your belongings.
- Accommodation — book major hotels online, but smaller motels may require calling ahead; locals can also guide you to lesser-known options once you arrive.
- Eating and drinking — the café culture is strong, with Algerian coffee, Atay tea, and French desserts widely available; international chains are absent, so ask a local for their favorite spot.
