About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Batman is a modern city in southeastern Turkey, entirely defined by its role as the hub of the country's largest oil-producing region. Originally a small Kurdish village named Iluh, it expanded rapidly from the mid-20th century after the discovery of the Raman and Batı Raman oilfields. Today, its character is largely industrial and functional, with a population approaching half a million.

While the city itself is not a traditional tourist destination, its unexpected name draws curious visitors. The city's name, pronounced baat-maan, has no connection to the comic-book superhero but has inspired playful photo opportunities and a notable moment of international attention. Beyond the name, Batman serves as a practical base for travelers moving through Southeastern Anatolia by road, rail, or air.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Fly in for efficiency — the airport is small and modern, with frequent flights from Istanbul (IST and SAW), making air travel the fastest way to arrive.
  • Use the railway for scenic, long-haul travel — the Güney Kurtalan Ekspresi offers a direct, if slow, connection from Ankara via Malatya and Diyarbakır, but schedule flexibility is essential.
  • Get around by dolmuş or taxi — public buses, shared minibuses (dolmuş), and taxis are the most practical ways to navigate this sprawling city.
  • Book ahead for early August trains — if traveling by rail around this period, be aware that seasonal agricultural labor migration causes severe overcrowding.
  • Stay near the city center — several simple hotels and guesthouses are located around the railway station on Mehmed Sincar Cd, providing easy access to transport and the main dining strip.
