About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Barueri is a city of striking contrasts in the São Paulo metro area, split by the Tietê River into two distinct sides. The older southwestern half remains largely residential and low-rise, while the northeastern side — known as Alphaville — is a planned district of high-rise business centers, gated suburban communities, and sprawling green spaces modeled after American urban design.

The city boasts one of the highest GDPs per capita in São Paulo state, powered by a strong industrial and service economy. That wealth drives investment in infrastructure and social programs across the city, though economic inequality between the two riverbanks remains a visible challenge.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Shopping and dining in Alphaville — the district's commercial center is built around high-end retail, bars, and restaurants, making it the default leisure hub for visitors staying in the area.
  • Sports and recreation — most fitness and sports facilities are located inside the gated residential communities, so access depends on where you are staying.
  • Cultural activities — offerings are limited and tend to be geared toward children; major museums and performances are typically absorbed by nearby São Paulo.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Alphaville's urban landscape — dense skyscrapers and a polished, planned streetscape create a distinctly artificial city feel unique in the region.
  • Historic Barueri center — the older part of the city reflects its origins as a 17th-century indigenous settlement, with a more traditional, low-rise atmosphere.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Arrive by car if possible — driving is the most efficient way to reach Alphaville from São Paulo via the Castelo Branco highway (exits 21–23), though tolls apply.
  • Metropolitan buses are an option — EMTU lines connect São Paulo metro stations to Alphaville, but trips can take around two hours.
  • Train access to old Barueri — CPTM Line 8-Diamond serves the Barueri station from Barra Funda, with a journey time of roughly 78 minutes.
  • Walking works in the centers — both Alphaville and Barueri's core areas are compact enough to explore on foot once you arrive.
