About this place

Bardhaman (also spelled Barddhaman), historically known as Burdwan, is a major city in West Bengal that serves as the agricultural heart of the state. Often called the "granary of Bengal," it is the fifth largest city in the region and a significant hub for transport, connecting seamlessly by rail and road to Kolkata and beyond. Since independence, the city has also evolved into a notable center for higher education.

The city carries a rich historical legacy, with its name linked to Vardhamana Mahavira, the 24th Jain Tirthankara. The region has witnessed centuries of battles and dynastic shifts, with the Bardhaman Raj family playing a particularly pivotal role in shaping its modern identity. This heritage is still visible today in key landmarks like the Curzon Gate, while the former royal palace now houses the University of Burdwan.
