About this place
Baotou (Chinese: 包头 Bāotóu, Mongolian: Buɣutu qota) is a modern, industry-led city in the western part of Inner Mongolia, situated on the banks of the Yellow River and backed by the Yinshan Mountains. Known as the “Steel City of the Grassland,” it is the largest city in Inner Mongolia and an important economic center, rich in mineral resources. The city blends grassland scenery with modernization, offering travelers a mix of natural landscapes and cultural heritage.
The city is divided into four main districts: Donghe (the old town), Qingshan (part of the new city), Jiuyuan, and Kunqu (Kandulun), which is the main shopping and entertainment area with western restaurants near Baobaidalou. The new city is bisected by Gangtie St, a large road connecting Qingshan in the east to Kunqu in the west. With a population of over two million, Baotou offers visitors a chance to experience both nomadic history and modern urban life.
