About this place
Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan and the largest city in the Caucasus, sitting on the Caspian Sea at the southern edge of the Absheron Peninsula. As the lowest-lying capital city in the world ({{{28|elevation}}}), Baku blends Turkish-Islamic heritage with strong Western European and Russian-Eastern European architectural influences. The city's population was around 2.3 million in 2020.
The city center is divided into three main areas: the walled Old Town (İçəri Şəhər), the Soviet-built district, and the newer modern quarter. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and contains many of Baku's most iconic landmarks. Despite the largely semi-arid and dusty landscape of the peninsula, the central city is kept green with piped water. Baku has an efficient metro, extensive bus and minibus networks, and walkable areas around Fountain Square and the seafront Boulevard.
