About this place
Bahir Dar sits on the southern shore of Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest lake, and serves as the capital of the Amhara region. It’s the country’s third largest city, with a population of around half a million, and is known for being clean and well-maintained compared to many other African cities. The city offers a relaxed, welcoming base for exploring the lake’s historic island monasteries and the Blue Nile Falls downstream.
Even budget accommodations provide neat, basic services, and getting around town is easy with inexpensive three-wheeled bajajs. The predominantly Amhara culture, coupled with the lakeside setting, gives Bahir Dar a distinct character that balances urban convenience with natural beauty.
